United in faith, hope and charity is the motto of the American organization for Christ for the Poor, whose mission is to rescue the teenagers working and living at the dump named ‘La Chureca’, through a vocational education program, with the purpose of cutting the chain of poverty and misery that surrounds dozens of youngsters who live amid the trash since childhood.
Alejandro Torres, director of Christ for the poor, said the organization has had a presence in Nicaragua for two years. The primary task is to assist through vocational education, health and values to young people living in marginal communities such as Acahualinca and in the dump ‘The Chureca’.
The group also provided vitamin supplements to about 285 children, affected with HIV. Torres said that the distribution is carried out with support from health authorities.
Currently, 35 young workers from the dump have entered a vocational education program that promotes the organization with support from the American University of Business Studies (AUBS), where they participate in electronic workshops.
Torres said that education is the only avenue that exists for young people to leave the circle of misery they live.
“We believe that the vocational courses that are offered at AUBS contributes to a change of environment, they can see that there are other options for life beyond the mountains of garbage, relating to an academic environment we believe will be something positive in their lives “.
The idea of the program was a suggestion by Daniel Garcia, a young man who for 12 years worked at the dump to survive and managed to leave that status through his studies.

Daily life at LaChureca
“He received a scholarship; he managed to study at the UCA (University of Central America) and graduate. One day we went to deliver toys and clothing to families in La Chureca, we found him there and we proposed the project, “says Torres, who firmly believes that promoting love and Christian values help to improve the quality of young and their families, however, the agency does not impose any religion.
The organization survives through donations raised in the U.S., and through a student sponsorship program.

Hello Alejandro, taking advantage of distance gives the distance, I salute you.
I deeply thank all of the team that makes up Christ for the Poor, both in the yield of Miami as that of Nicaragua. I agree with you, the boys who study electronics, is perhaps the only glimmer of hope that they have for a long time in order to accomplish their goals, dreams and hopes.
These boys are full of joy, intelligence and creativity and there are very few economic resources and therefore I’m sure they will take advantage of the opportunities offered now.
I want to thank donors of CFP, without them it would be impossible to promote this great dream, the dream of our Lord Jesus Christ: support, help and solidarity with the poor, the forgotten and excluded by the system. For all of that, thank you.
Today I’m in a new phase of my life at 27 years old, studying for my MA in Marketing and Communications at the University of Valencia, Spain. This truly is from God, because I won a scholarship from the Bancaja Foundation. Today, mute as the eagle and fly even higher. But it was not possible without the help of friendly hands that have given me this opportunity to grow.
On behalf of the boys from the electronics course: thank you very much for your efforts, dedication and above all for your commitment to the poorest.
God bless you all.
